Brazilian Amazon
Brazilnut trees in southwestern Amazon
In 2006, I was visiting clients in the southwestern State of Acre, Brazil and took the opportunity to venture into an area still considered part of the Amazon. However, as you can see from the photographs, deforestation and encroachment of cattle grazing has denuded the landscape of former jungles of high canopied trees and replaced them with vast ranges of grazing land with lonely Brazil nut trees the only reminder there used to be a forest.
Texas State Capitol
Texas State Capitol Building, Austin, TX
In early 2009, I had the opportunity to visit the Capitol building in Austin, Texas on a beautiful spring day. The granite structure seems to reflect the solid, immovable attitudes of the legislators who work inside. But the flowering trees outside bring hope of rebirth and renovation. The Texas Legislature meets only every other year, typically for six months.
Lower Egypt
Pyramids at Giza
Ancient Egyptians recognized two regions of Egypt - Upper Egypt from Abu Simbel to Luxor, and Lower Egypt from Luxor to the Mediterranean. From my first visit to Egypt in 1986, the country has changed significantly. These photos were taken between 2006 and 2008. Browse images from Cairo and the pyramids at Giza down the Nile to Luxor and Karnak Temples. Imagine yourself entering the enormous gates of Edfu Temple or examining the hyroglyphs at Komombo. But the most impressive structures at Abu Simbel were rescued from the rising waters of the Nile before being submerged behind the Aswan dam.

Caribbean - Antigua
Jolly Beach, Antigua
During a week on the island of Antigua in the West Indies we enjoyed the beach and the spectacular sunsets. Antigua claims 365 separate beaches, one for each day of the year. Columbus landed on the island on his second voyage to the West Indies in 1493. The British formed a colony in 1667 which attained independence in 1981 but retains ties to the UK through the British Commonwealth of Nations.

Caribbean - Montserrat
Montserrat
The Soufriere Hills volcano erupted on the island of Montserrat in 1995 and destroyed most of the capital city of Plymouth as well as the international airport. Pyrocastic flows proceeded to the sea and added large areas of land mass to the island. The island continues to shake from earthquakes and the volcano exudes occasional flows of lava and molten rock.

Caribbean - Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico became a commonwealth of the United States after the Spanish American War of 1898. Although Puerto Rico does not have the status of a state, citizens of Puerto Rico are citizens of the United States and fall under the protection of the federal government. Since they cannot vote in national elections, they do not pay federal income tax which is one of the major reasons that inhabitants have repeatedly defeated attempts to become the 51st state. Christopher Columbus landed in Puerto Rico on his second voyage to the West Indies in 1493. The geography of the island with a deep, protected port at San Juan and in relation to the other islands of the Caribbean, provided significant strategic advantages to whichever power occupied the island.

Caribbean - St. Lucia
Petit Piton and Gros Piton, St. Lucia
The spectacular mountains of Gros Piton and Petit Piton rise up almost 800 meters out of the Caribbean. An interesting custom which the inhabitants follow is to bury their dead in cemetaries within site of the sea.

Flowers (Under Construction)
Marigolds in Gdansk
Painters and photographers love to capture the colors and textures of flowers and blooming plants. Some of these images come from as far away as India or as close as my back yard.

Kerala province, India (Under Construction)
Water flowers in Kerala
In the southwest region of India lies the province of Kerala. Running parallel to the coast of the Bay of Bengal lies a series of inland waterways connecting lakes and rivers. Millions of people live along these waterways and use them for fishing and for transportation. It is likely to develop into a popular tourist destination.
